Introduction

Being able to recognise problems in animal health and welfare is essential for anyone working with laboratory animals.

The tutorial will go through indices of good health and welfare. It will also discuss ways to recognise signs of pain, suffering and distress in laboratory animals.

This tutorial is intended to be an introduction to animal health and welfare assessment, targeted at new research workers.

General principles will be outlined. Species specific information can be found on other tutorials in this website.

Note that a veterinarian should always be consulted if health problems are suspected.
